What Does 10000 Avios Points Get You?

If you’ve finally broken the 5 figure mark in Avios points you might be wondering what redemptions are available to you. Perhaps you and your partner have both taken out the free BA Amex and are wondering if you pool your points together what you can do with the sign-up bonus? In this post, we will take a look at what 10000 Avios points will get you!

Will we receive the 10000 Avios Points bonus if we both take out a FREE BA Amex?

To be eligible for this bonus you can’t have held or currently hold any personal American Express in the last 24 months. By taking this card out you also stop yourself from getting a bonus on any other personal American Express card. For further information on eligibility take a look at our article here – https://pointsuncovered.com/american-express/amex-changes-sign-up-bonus-eligibility/

If you are completely new to Amex you may be interested in taking a look at our Fast Track to 250,000 Marriott Points or Fast Track to 200,000 Avios Points.

You can also be referred by us for the FREE BA Amex, you will receive an additional 1000 points. Get a referral here – https://pointsuncovered.com/amex-referral-link-uk/

Please note…

This is my experience using the points system and is not a recommendation of any financial product. There are other credit cards that can earn you travel points including IHG credit card, Tesco Credit Cards (by exchanging Clubcard points for Virgin points, hotel stays and more) & Virgin Atlantic credit card. If you use one of my links for a referral to an American Express card upon you being accepted I will receive points, this varies between 9,000 – 18,000 depending on the card I refer you from.

Firstly…

If you are new to Amex and aren’t interested in paying an annual fee or following our guide to fast-track yourself to 250,000 Avios but want to make as many points as possible the free BA card ISN’T the best choice.

Take a look at The American Express® Preferred Rewards Gold Credit Card. It’s FREE for the first year and comes with a 20,000 membership reward point welcome bonus which converts into 20,000 Avios. Cancel before the year is up and then take out the Free BA card if you want a free card to collect Avios… you won’t pay a penny! The spending target is higher, however, £3,000 in 3 months rather than £1,000. You could repeat this with your partner and earn 40,000 Avios, not including any further spending or referral bonuses.

Avios

Avios is one of the most popular frequent flyer/point schemes in the UK. As it covers lots of short-haul and long haul flights from the UK it’s also our favourite flying scheme to redeem points into. To calculate how many points you will need for a redemption you can use BA’s reward flight calculator here – https://www.britishairways.com/travel/avios-calculator/public/en_gb?eId=199006 – There is also a useful third party tool called reward flight finder that you can find here – https://rewardflightfinder.com/

One of our favourite things about British Airways and Avios is their reward flight saver scheme (RFS.) This caps economy returns at £35pp and business at £50pp in Europe. You’re eligible as long as you’ve collected at least one Avios in the past 12 months. It’s important to note this might not be the cheapest way to travel with your avios points, also check reward flights as two single fares as occasionally this will be cheaper.

Are there any other good options to use my 10000 Avios on?

Since the introduction of Nectar as an Avios partner, your next best option would be to convert your Avios to Nectar points. Using the conversion rate of 250 Avios to 400 Nectar points means your 10000 Avios would get you 16,000 Nectar points. Nectar points in almost all cases are worth 0.5p so 16,000 x 0.005 gives you 80. £80 worth of points you can spend at any Nectar partner for example Sainsbury’s, Argos & eBay! You can view all Nectar’s spend partners here – https://www.nectar.com/card/spend

What value should I be aiming to get from my 10000 Avios?

Unless you are travelling in Europe do not redeem Avios points for economy. This often is very poor value (points to pence) and you’d be better off paying cash for economy or redeeming for a business or first redemption. With Avios points we aim for at least 1p to a point, but depending on how you earn your points/how you normally fly you may have a different valuation of your points. We’ve tried to explain how to work out your own valuation here – https://pointsuncovered.com/avios/how-to-work-out-avios-point-value/. If you often fly budget airlines in Europe you may find saving your points for premium long haul redemptions better value!
