What Can I Do With 10000 Nectar Points?

If you are looking to sign up for the Sainsbury’s Nectar Credit Card you might be wondering what the sign-up bonus of 10000 Nectar Points is worth? (You’ll need to spend £400 at Sainsbury’s, Tu Clothing or Argos within 2 months to get it.) Read on to find out what travel opportunities 10000 Nectar points will give you!

Am I eligible for the card?

There is no minimum income requirement stated but you need to have had a Nectar card open for at least 6 months before applying. If you haven’t got one you can sign up for one here – https://www.nectar.com/

Please note…

This is my experience using the points system and is not a recommendation of any financial product. There are other credit cards which can earn you travel points including IHG credit cardAmerican Express Credit CardsVirgin Atlantic credit card. If you use one of my links for a referral to an American Express card upon you being accepted I will receive points, this varies between 9,000 – 18,000 depending on the card I refer you from.

The card…

You can read more about the card on Sainsbury’s website here – https://www.sainsburysbank.co.uk/credit-cards – scroll down to the Nectar Credit Card.

Whilst the card has no annual fee which might be attractive to some users the ongoing earn rate is very poor. You would receive 1 Nectar point per £5 for general spending and 2 points per £1 for spending in Sainsbury’s, Tu Clothing and Argos. Which equals 0.125 Avios per £1 on general spend and 1.25 Avios per £1 on Sainsbury’s, Tu Clothing and Argos.

Compare this to the Nectar American Express Card which earns 2 Nectar points per £1 spent EVERYWHERE. That’s 5 times the amount the Sainsbury’s card earns on general spend and equal to 1.25 Avios per £1.

The Nectar Credit card isn’t particularly good for using abroad either as Sainsbury’s Bank adds a 2.75% foreign exchange fee to transactions abroad.

You may be tempted to get it just for the sign-up bonus. I certainly am! The ongoing earn rate is nothing to write home about… particularly if you don’t shop at Sainsbury’s! What travel opportunities will 10000 Nectar Points get me?

There are currently 2 travel-related partners that you can redeem your Nectar points with, they are British Airways and Eurostar.

British Airways

You can redeem your Nectar points for Avios points in chunks of 400 Nectar points. Every 400 you convert will get you 250 Avios which means the sign-up bonus is worth 6,250 Avios. Read more on the partnership here – https://pointsuncovered.com/nectar/you-can-now-earn-avios-with-sainsburys/

If you are wondering where you can go for the points check out our article here – https://pointsuncovered.com/avios/where-can-i-fly-to-for-5000-avios-points/

Key information

You can instantly exchange between Nectar & British Airways Avios once you’ve linked your accounts. To do so check out our guide here – https://pointsuncovered.com/avios/how-to-link-your-avios-nectar-accounts/

Eurostar

With Eurostar 2000 points are worth £10 off your Eurostar booking. (You can only redeem in multiples of 2000.) Your vouchers can either be used to part pay (pay the rest via debit/credit card like normal) or pay in full your booking.

This means 10000 Nectar points is worth £50 when redeemed for Eurostar tickets. £50 with Eurostar could get you a single ticket in standard class to Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam or Rotterdam. During sales, you could get a return ticket to certain locations.

Key information

If booking a combined train and hotel booking at Eurostar.com you can only use one voucher for the booking.

If you are making a train-only booking at Eurostar.com you can redeem multiple vouchers at the same time.

Conclusion

I’m not a fan of the card as a whole due to the poor ongoing earning rate and it’s foreign exchange fees BUT I can see myself applying just for the sign-up bonus and leaving the card in the draw.

Whilst in this post we are focusing on travel opportunities you can of course spend your Nectar points in Sainsbury’s and Argos to name a few retailers. The valuation is the same, you will receive £2.50 per 500 points redeemed, although occasionally there are special offers to double the value of your points in Sainsbury’s. You can view all the partners you can spend with on Nectar’s website here – https://www.nectar.com/card/spend
