How To Transfer Virgin Points To Someone Else

Do any of your friends and/or family have any stray Virgin Points? Virgin Atlantic now allows you to transfer Virgin Points to someone else for the flat price of just £10. This replaces the previously absurd pricing of £7.50 per 1,000 Virgin Points plus a £15 administration fee. Under the previous arrangement you’d have to pay a whooping £127.50 just to transfer 15,000 Virgin Points (the current sign-up bonus on the Virgin Atlantic Reward+ Credit Card)…

How can I transfer Virgin Points to someone else?

There are two ways you can transfer Virgin Points to someone else

  1. On the Virgin Red app
  2. On the Virgin Atlantic website

Via the Virgin Red app

Once downloaded, registered and linked your Virgin Atlantic account to your Virgin Red account you are ready to go. In the search bar at the top search for ‘Transfer’ then the option to Transfer Points should appear. Click this then Hit the Transfer Points button at bottom and you will be taken through to the Virgin Red website & then points.com to complete the transfer.

On the Virgin Atlantic website

Once logged in on the Virgin Atlantic website you can transfer points via the ‘Buy, Sell, Transfer Points‘ section of the Virgin Atlantic website

What way is easiest?

Both processes are pretty similar to transfer points to be honest. The only ‘difficulty’ you might come across transferring via Virgin Red is that you are asked for the recipients Virgin Red ID. This isn’t their email or Virgin Atlantic Flying Club number but rather a multi word phrase that you can find in the Virgin Red app under ‘Account’ and then ‘Account Details.’ If you transfer on the Virgin Atlantic website you don’t need this, you need only the recipients Flying Club number.

Are there any limits when I transfer Virgin Points?

You can transfer up to 2,000,000 Virgin Points in one transaction. In practice you may need to make two transfers (£20) to get the exact number of points in a larger transaction as the points don’t increase by 1,000 as the numbers get bigger. Small transactions complete instantly. Larger transactions go for additional security checks.

What use is there for transferring Virgin Points?

Unfortunately Virgin Atlantic doesn’t have household accounts like British Airways where a family can pool all their points together for a redemption. So the ability to transfer Virgin Points to another person will help families/friends who have points over multiple accounts to make bigger redemptions together by sending them all to a single account.

One way around this (which wasn’t well publicised) was the ability to pool together points from multiple accounts when making a booking with the call centre. This is no longer needed (and potentially not available anymore) with this latest change.

Conclusion

It’s great to see Virgin Atlantic come up with something genuinely useful to anyone who holds Virgin Points and without an absurd price. Lets hope British Airways style household accounts are also on their radar…
