Where Can I Fly To For 100000 Avios?

Whilst 100000 Avios sounds a lot (and impossible to collect) when you start to consider the sign-up bonuses on offer from time to time it’s not unreachable by any stretch of the imagination. For example, the Barclaycard Avios Plus currently has a 50,000 Avios sign-up bonus (until the 18th of July 22.) If you and a partner got the card (and hit the spending target of £3,000 in 3 months) you’d be looking at a cool 100000 Avios (make sure you are eligible for any bonus before applying.) So once you’ve collected 100000 Avios what can you do with them? Read on to find out!

Please note…

This is my experience using the points system and is not a recommendation of any financial product. There are other credit cards that can earn you travel points including American Express cardsTesco Credit Cards (by exchanging Clubcard points for Avios, hotel stays, and more) & Virgin Atlantic credit card. If you use my link for a referral to an American Express card upon you being accepted I will receive points, this varies between 9,000 – 18,000 depending on the card I refer you from.

What else will 100000 Avios points get me?

You can use Avios for wine or Avios for hotels but generally speaking this is poor value. Your best value option would be to redeem for Nectar points.

Avios convert into Nectar points at the rate of 250 to 400 and as you probably know Nectar points are worth 0.5p a point. That means by converting your Avios (400 Nectar points is worth £2 divide that by 250) you are receiving 0.8p worth of value per point. So if you converted your entire 100000 Avios point stash it would be worth £800.

Some of the places you can redeem your Nectar points at include…

  • Sainsbury’s
  • eBay
  • Argos
  • Eurostar

Don’t forget the Avios Upgrade voucher…

If you are able to spend 10K in a year on the Barclaycard Avios Plus you will get an Avios Upgrade Voucher which is in effect a 50% voucher (roughly) to use on Avios redemptions. This will allow you to book a Business Class ticket for the Avios cost of a Premium Economy ticket or in Europe a Business Class ticket for the Avios cost of a Economy ticket. You will be charged the ‘taxes and fees’ for the cabin you book into rather than the cheaper one.

Or alternatively a 2-4-1 voucher from the BA Amex Premium Plus…

If you are able to spend 10K in a year on the BA Amex Premium Plus you will get a BA Companion Voucher which is in effect a 2-4-1 voucher to use on Avios redemptions. This allows you to get 2 tickets for the price of one in Avios, the cash element of ‘taxes and charges’ would still be due for both tickets. So that one premium economy or business class seats could turn into two!

What value should I be aiming to get on an Avios redemption?

Unless you are travelling in Europe do not redeem Avios points for economy. This is often very poor value (points to pence) and you’d be better off paying cash for economy or redeeming for a business or first redemption. With Avios points, I aim for at least 1p to a point but depending on how you earn your points/how you normally fly you may have a different valuation of your points. If you often fly budget airlines in Europe you may find saving your points for premium long-haul redemptions better value!
