What Are 50000 Avios Points Worth?

You might have seen our articles about what you can do with the sign-up bonus from various credit cards. But what next? Perhaps you’ve saved your Avios points up or combined with a partner, so what can you get now? In this post, we are going to look at what 50000 Avios points will get you!

Avios

Avios is one of the most popular point ‘currencies’ to collect in the UK with British Airways. It not only covers long-haul trips but you’ll also find lots of short-haul destinations in the UK and Europe. If you want to work out how many points you will need for a redemption you can use BA’s reward flight calculator here – https://www.britishairways.com/travel/avios-calculator/public/en_gb?eId=199006 – There is also a useful third party tool called reward flight finder that you can find here – https://rewardflightfinder.com/

One of the most useful things about collecting Avios with British Airways is their reward flight saver scheme (RFS.) This caps economy returns at £35pp and business at £50pp in Europe. Some international destinations are also included but only for economy tickets, see the full list here – https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/executive-club/spending-avios/reward-flights. You’re eligible as long as you’ve collected at least one Avios in the past 12 months. It’s important to note this might not be the cheapest way to travel with your Avios points, also check reward flights as two single fares as occasionally this will be cheaper.

What else will 50000 Avios points get me?

You can use Avios for wine or Avios for hotels but generally speaking this is poor value. Your best value option would be to redeem for Nectar points.

Avios convert into Nectar points at the rate of 250 to 400 and as you probably know Nectar points are worth 0.5p a point. That means by converting your Avios (400 Nectar points is worth £2 divide that by 250) you are receiving 0.8p worth of value per point. So if you converted your entire 50000 Avios point stash it would be worth £800.

Some of the places you can redeem your Nectar points at include…

  • Sainsbury’s
  • eBay
  • Argos
  • Eurostar

Want to transfer to Nectar? Check out our guide here – https://pointsuncovered.com/avios/how-to-link-your-avios-nectar-accounts/

British Airways 2-4-1 Voucher

Don’t forget if you have a British Airways 2-4-1 Voucher (10K Annual spend on the BA Premium Card or 20K spend on the Free BA Card) you will get 2 Avios redemptions for the price of one. Unfortunately, you still need to pay the ‘taxes and fees’ on the second person’s ticket. You can read more about the 2-4-1 voucher here – https://pointsuncovered.com/american-express/are-ba-companion-vouchers-worth-it-ba-amex-2-4-1/ – This is particularly useful as at 50K it means you can fly with a partner to anywhere in Europe in Business Class (Zone 3 and below)

How can I earn more Avios?

Here are some ways you can earn more Avios…

What value should I be aiming to get on an Avios redemption?

Unless you are travelling Europe do not redeem Avios points for economy because this is normally terrible value! The pence per point value is very low and you’d be better off paying cash and saving your Avios for another redemption. We have an article on whether you should use Avios for long-haul economy flights here – https://pointsuncovered.com/avios/should-i-use-avios-on-long-haul-economy-flights/. We aim for at least 1p a point, but depending on you earn your Avios and how you normally fly your valuation may vary. Take a look at our guide here to work out your own valuation of Avios points –
