Over the last few years, the petrol station loyalty schemes and partners have changed drastically. Gone are Avios earning opportunities at Shell, BP & Tesco BUT fortunately they have been replaced! How Many Avios Will I Earn When Buying Petrol?

Filling up at both Sainsbury’s & Esso earn exactly the same amount of points, 1 Nectar Point per litre of fuel. This is equal to earning 0.625 Avios per litre. You need to convert your Nectar points in batches of 400 points (400 Nectar points = 250 Avios) and link your Nectar & Avios account before doing so. If a litre of petrol costs you 129p it would mean you would be getting approximately 0.484 Avios per £1.

If you buy other items in the petrol garage Esso has a slightly higher earning rate of 2 Nectar Points per £1 spent over Sainsbury’s 1 Nectar Point per £1 spent.

This isn’t as generous as earning at Tesco was BUT if the price is similar or you use Sainsbury’s/Esso Petrol anyway you may as well earn some extra points on your spend!

Conclusion

As you can see it’s probably not worth your while going elsewhere for petrol, particularly if your normal petrol station is cheaper. But if you fill up frequently you could make a decent from earning Avios on your petrol spend.
