Avios To Nectar Online Transfers Are BACK!

At long last after months of waiting Avios To Nectar online transfers are due to ‘switched back on’ from 9am today (Wednesday 21st July.) As we covered previously Avios To Nectar online transfers were temporarily disabled after reports of scammers emptying Avios accounts into Nectar and then immediately spending the points.

Avios’ partnership with Nectar

Back in January Avios announced a partnership with Nectar after their previous partnership with Tesco Clubcard ended. The partnership was particularly interesting due to the generous transfer rate on offer between Avios/Nectar. You’d receive…

400 Nectar Points for every 250 Avios points you convert

250 Avios points for every 400 Nectar Points you convert

You can only convert in multiples of 250 for Avios points and multiples of 400 for Nectar points.

This put a new minimum floor value on Avios of 0.8p as 250 worth of Avios would get you 400 Nectar points worth £2. Previously if you weren’t using your Avios for flights you’d get around 0.5p worth of value per Avios. This meant Avios points became a lot more lucrative to a lot more people…

What went wrong?

The transfer system wasn’t built with security in mind… You were able to link any Nectar card to any Avios account without any personal details needing to match. You could even link and unlink the same Nectar card to multiple Avios accounts! The cherry on top was transfers are instant… a dream come true for some.

With lots of hacked British Airways account data available for sale on the dark web, it opened the door for unscrupulous individuals to take advantage. You could create a new Nectar card online, take 50,000 Avios out of the hacked BA account instantly by converting to Nectar, and straight away spend in Argos/Sainsburys, etc. This could then be repeated on the same Nectar card with a different BA account!

What’s changed?

As it isn’t live (at the time of writing) we don’t know what has changed regarding the transfer system. We’d assume however some form of 2-factor authentication has been implemented.
