It appears either by design or mistake American Express have changed one of the rules of the sign-up bonus eligibility for their Membership Reward earning Amex Business Cards. I know what you are thinking… how has it got worse? Well, it hasn’t… It’s a POSITIVE change! Read on to find out more…

What are the Membership Reward Amex Business Cards sign-up bonus rules?

Usually, the rules state – You will not be eligible for any Welcome Bonus award if you currently hold or have held any Membership Rewards enrolled American Express Card in the past six months. However, now it appears this has been shortened to 3 months…

In essence, the bonus will be exactly the same as before except you are now eligible for the bonus after 3 months without a Membership Reward earning card rather than 6 months.

On the website, it shows 6 months for Amex Business Cards still?

It only appears if you visit the Amex Business cards via a certain route… Go to their website – https://www.americanexpress.com/

On the American Express Homepage, Click Cards > Click View Personal Cards > Then when it says Browse All Cards go across to The Gold Business or Platinum Business > Click Learn More > Scroll down it shows 3 months

If you go straight to the business cards from the Homepage, Click Cards > View All Business Cards > then learn more on the Gold Business or Platinum Business it shows 6 months

Should I apply for a Amex Business Card?

If you haven’t had a membership reward earning American Express card in the last 3 months I would consider it. Make sure you follow the route which leads to the version which says 3 months rather than 6. It should have the following under the ‘Eligibility’ section…

You will not be eligible for any Welcome Bonus award if you currently hold or have held any Membership Rewards enrolled American Express Card in the past three months.

I would also screenshot this when applying to make sure Amex doesn’t try to pull it later and say it’s 6 months still.

Conclusion

If you are eligible for the sign-up bonus I would personally consider going for it! I unfortunately still have a membership reward earning card so I am not eligible.
