Earning Virgin Points at Best Western: The 2026 Status Match

Nobody grows up dreaming of elite status at Best Western. But if you spend any time travelling around the UK in 2026, you will inevitably end up needing a room in a regional town where the only options are a Premier Inn or a Best Western. Corporate travel budgets have tightened significantly over the last few years, and many business travellers who previously stayed exclusively at Hiltons or Marriotts are finding themselves booked into mid-scale properties for domestic trips.

This is where a very specific arbitrage opportunity comes in. By taking five minutes to status match your existing hotel tier over to Best Western, you secure free breakfast and a flat 500 Virgin Points on a cheap one-night stay. It turns a begrudging regional booking into a lucrative top-up for your next SkyTeam redemption. If you are already reading Points Uncovered, you likely have the exact credit cards needed to make this work.

How the 2026 Best Western status match works

You send an email to Best Western with a screenshot of your current hotel status, and they upgrade your account to match it within 48 hours. The process is entirely manual but highly reliable.

Most people reading this will use the American Express Platinum Card as their entry point. That card gives you complimentary Hilton Honors Gold or Marriott Bonvoy Gold status. Best Western will match those mid-tier statuses directly to Best Western Diamond under their “Status Match… No Catch” program. If you have earned top-tier status elsewhere, such as Hilton Diamond, Best Western will push you to their highest tier, Diamond Select.

Do not apply for this match until you actually have a Best Western stay booked. Email a clear screenshot of your Hilton or Marriott profile showing your current status level to StatusMatch@bestwestern.com a few days before check-in. Include your Best Western Rewards membership number in the email. Once the confirmation email arrives, your new tier will reflect in the app immediately.

Earning Virgin Points instead of Best Western points

Best Western awards a flat 500 Virgin Points per qualifying stay when you select Virgin Atlantic as your earning preference in your online profile. You must make this choice before you check in.

Opting for Virgin Points means you forfeit the standard Best Western Rewards earning rate. The standard rate is 10 points per $1 USD spent on your room rate. At current 2026 exchange rates, that translates to roughly 12.5 Best Western points per £1 spent. You cannot earn both currencies at the same time. You have to log into your Best Western profile, navigate to your account settings, and explicitly change your earning preference from ‘Points’ to ‘Airlines’.

The cheap one-nighter strategy

Because the Virgin earning is a flat 500 points, the math only works on short, cheap stays. If you book a £60 one-night stay in Norfolk, earning 500 Virgin Points is a fantastic return. If you book a £400 three-night stay, choosing airline miles means you are throwing away around 5,000 Best Western points. Always change your earning preference in your profile based on the specific cost of your upcoming booking.

The consecutive night rule

Best Western IT classes back-to-back nights at the same property as a single stay. You cannot check out on Tuesday morning and check back in on Tuesday afternoon to trigger another 500 points. You will earn exactly 500 Virgin Points for the entire duration, even if you make separate bookings for each night.

Elite benefits at UK properties

Your matched Diamond status provides free breakfast, room upgrades, and early check-in at participating UK hotels regardless of whether you choose to earn Virgin Points or standard hotel points.

Best Western operates over 250 properties across the UK, heavily weighted toward tier-3 cities and regional towns where larger chains lack a footprint. Because it is a franchise operation, elite recognition varies wildly across the network. A modern Best Western Plus in York might proactively upgrade you to a suite and hand you a welcome drink. A tired roadside property in the Midlands might look blankly at your digital membership card and claim they do not participate in Diamond upgrades. Keep your expectations grounded.

The guaranteed benefit you should always push for is the welcome amenity, which usually translates to complimentary breakfast or a small points bonus. Always take the breakfast.

Common traps that stop your points from tracking

Booking through online travel agents and encountering profile glitches are the two main reasons your Virgin Points will fail to post after a stay.

Best Western’s IT infrastructure is famously fragmented because the properties are independently owned. You have to navigate a few specific rules to ensure your 500 points actually reach your Virgin Red account:

  • Booking through Expedia, Booking.com, or Hotels.com instantly voids both your elite benefits and your 500 Virgin Points. You must book direct via the Best Western website or app.
  • Discounted corporate or group rates often earn zero miles. If your company books a heavily negotiated rate on your behalf, you might not be eligible for the Virgin Points drop.
  • The Best Western app sometimes defaults your earning preference back to points after an update. Check your profile settings the day before check-in to ensure Virgin Atlantic is still selected.
  • Incidental spend does not count. Charging a £100 dinner to your room yields zero extra Virgin Points.

Always ask for a printed folio at checkout. Missing points are common with this partnership. You will almost certainly need that paper receipt to submit a missing points claim via Virgin Red if the 500 points do not appear in your account within 14 days.

Comparing Virgin Points against other airline options

Virgin Atlantic offers the highest return for Best Western stays because the primary alternative is a much lower earning rate with Iberia Plus.

Best Western does not partner with the British Airways Executive Club. If you want Avios, you have to credit your stay to Iberia Plus, which earns just 250 Avios per stay. Virgin’s 500 points offer exactly double the volume for the exact same stay. Once the points hit your Virgin account, they are safe. Virgin Atlantic removed points expiry several years ago, meaning the 500 points earned from a one-off Best Western stay will never lapse, even if you never stay at the chain again.

If you are choosing between a Best Western and a Premier Inn in a regional town, and both cost £70, the Best Western wins easily. Premier Inn offers zero loyalty program and zero airline miles. The combination of matched Diamond benefits and 500 Virgin Points makes the Best Western the clear mathematical choice.

Stacking credit card multipliers

You earn additional points when you pay for your Best Western stay using a travel rewards credit card, compounding your total return.

The 500 points from the hotel are just the base earning. If you pay for the room using the Virgin Atlantic Reward+ Mastercard, you earn an additional 1.5 Virgin Points per £1 spent. On a £100 stay, you would earn the flat 500 points from Best Western, plus 150 points from the credit card, netting you 650 Virgin Points total.

Alternatively, if you are working toward a sign-up bonus or prefer flexible currency, putting the spend on your American Express Preferred Rewards Gold card earns 1 Membership Rewards point per £1, which you can later transfer to Virgin Points or Avios.

My honest verdict on the 2026 partnership

The status match is worth doing purely as an optimisation play for cheap domestic travel, provided you manage your expectations about the hotels themselves.

Honestly, I am not convinced anyone should go out of their way to stay at a Best Western just for 500 Virgin Points. The franchise quality is too inconsistent, and the IT requires too much babysitting. But that is not the reality of business travel. When corporate budgets or wedding locations force you into a mid-scale regional hotel, you might as well extract maximum value from it. The 500 points will not expire, the status match takes five minutes using your Amex Platinum, and it gives you a highly profitable return on a boring £60 booking.
