Qatar Airways Privilege Club has recently extended its partnership with Marriott Bonvoy. You have always been able to convert into Qatar Airways Privilege Club Avios at the usual 3:1 rate but now you can convert the other way, converting your Avios to Marriott Bonvoy points! Which leads us onto the big question…

Should I convert my Avios to Marriott Bonvoy points?

If you value an Avios point at 1p and a Marriott Bonvoy point at 0.66p (like us) it means you converting ‘2p’ worth of air miles into 0.66p worth of hotel points. That’s a massive drop in value… two thirds drop! Even more so when you consider it is actually quite easy to get more than 1p worth of value per Avios point.

Of course, there may be niche scenarios where this transfer might help: perhaps you’re a few points short of a Marriott award stay, or you have excess Avios sitting unused and an immediate hotel booking in mind. Still, for most people, the mathematics don’t add up in your favor. You would be better off saving your membership reward points (if you have a membership reward earning Amex) and transferring into Marriott rather than Avios or buying them in a promotion where you can get them for around 0.8p a point, a huge difference to giving up 2p worth of Avios!
