Purchase Avios From 0.89P With An Avios Subscription From BA

Avios has today launched an interesting new service called Avios subscription. This, as the name might suggest, will give you a fixed amount of Avios each month when you sign-up for a monthly or annual subscription.

How does an Avios Subscription work?

There are four different options you can choose from offering a range of different Avios at different costs. You can choose to pay monthly or annually, with the annual option coming with two months free so you are getting 12 months of Avios for the price of 10.

Regardless if you choose to pay annually or monthly you will receive your Avios monthly.

Is an Avios Subscription good value?

Based on a yearly commitment you could pick up an Avios point from as little as 0.92p for the Voyager plan, 0.91p for Traveller, 0.90p for Explorer, and 0.89p for Adventurer. Based on our 1p valuation you should be able to profit from a subscription BUT you need to consider your own valuation when comparing.

On top of this by committing to a subscription (particularly over 12 months) you run the risk of being exposed to devaluations. Whether that is through an increase in the Avios cost of a flight or an increase of the ‘taxes & fees’ BA charge.

That being said this is the cheapest option we’ve ever seen to purchase Avios direct from British Airways, so if you are in the market for me or need more to make a redemption you are unlikely to get a better rate.

One potential usage for the Avios Subscription could be for someone who earns a BA 2-4-1 voucher with their BA Amex BUT doesn’t earn enough Avios to use it as they would like.

Things to bear in mind…

If you decide to purchase an annual subscription you have to pay the full amount upfront and commit to 12 months. You can’t cancel part way through for a pro-rata refund.

Monthly subscriptions have a minimum subscription period of 3 months.

Subscriptions will auto-renew so make sure you cancel/turn off the auto-renew in time if you don’t want to continue your subscription.

Conclusion

Whilst this is the cheapest purchase rate we’ve seen for Avios we’d proceed with caution before committing to anything. You need to make sure that 1) you can exceed the value you pay for the Avios & 2) be aware that things in the points game can change quickly e.g. devaluations without warning. You could of course convert into Nectar points for 0.8p per Avios but you would lose at a minimum 0.09p worth of value per point. Are you tempted to take out an Avios subscription?
