Your Amex UK transfer bonus ends soon and BA Club isn’t linked yet: how to work out if you can still catch it
The short answer
If your British Airways Club account isn’t linked to Membership Rewards yet, a transfer bonus sits behind two waits, not one. Amex UK asks you to allow up to 14 days to verify a newly linked account. Once linked, a transfer “will usually be complete within five working days”.
Which wait matters depends on what the offer’s terms reward. If the bonus needs points credited to your partner account by the end date, the cautious lead time is the full verification allowance plus the usual transfer time: roughly three weeks of calendar time. If it only needs the transfer submitted by the end date, the verification allowance alone is the constraint.
If you have less time than the relevant window, you might still make it: verification can finish inside its allowance, and Amex says transfers can be much faster. You just can’t count on it. Having more time than the window isn’t a guarantee either, because the transfer figure is a usual time, not a ceiling. Don’t price a trip around the bonus, and don’t transfer more than you’d use in that programme without one.
One caveat applies throughout. I haven’t retrieved the terms of any live Amex UK or BA transfer bonus, so every deadline in this piece is hypothetical and expressed relative to today. Your offer’s own terms are the deciding document.
What Amex UK actually documents about the two windows
Both figures come from the same Membership Rewards FAQ page. It’s undated, and I retrieved it on 2 November 2026, so check it hasn’t changed before you rely on it.
Linking: “up to 14 days” to verify
That is a ceiling Amex asks you to plan around, not a measured average. Verification may well finish sooner, but no source I have gives real-world verification times, so I won’t guess at a typical figure.
The page also doesn’t say whether the 14 days are calendar or working days. I’ve treated them as calendar days: the page doesn’t say working days here, yet it specifies working days for transfers a few lines later. That is an interpretation. If Amex means working days, the allowance stretches to nearly three calendar weeks on its own, and every calculation below gets longer.
Transfers: “usually” within five working days, once linked
The full sentence carries conditions: “Provided you are already enrolled and your accounts are linked then the points transfer will usually be complete within five working days. This varies for frequent flyer partner and can be much faster, so please refer to the partner details for specific timings.”
Three things follow. The five-day clock doesn’t start until linking is done. “Usually” leaves room for slower transfers. And BA Club may have its own stated timing in Amex’s partner details. I haven’t retrieved that BA-specific figure, so check it yourself and use it in place of five working days, whether it’s shorter or longer.
Four things to read in the offer’s terms first
Amex notes that partners often promote bonus offers for transferring points, so the terms may be published by Amex, by the partner or by both. Find them and check these four things before you do any arithmetic:
- The qualifying event. Does the bonus apply to transfers submitted, processed or credited by the end date? “Processed” and “credited” both put the transfer window inside your deadline. If the wording is vague, treat it as credited.
- The exact end point. Is there a time as well as a date, and in which time zone? “Midnight” on a stated date can be read as the start of that day rather than the end, so if the terms aren’t explicit, plan on the earlier reading.
- Any registration or opt-in. Some offers need you to register before transferring. If yours does, find out whether registration itself needs a linked account, and whether it has its own cut-off.
- The bonus mechanics. Is there a minimum transfer, a cap on bonus points, or a separate posting date for the bonus portion? A bonus that posts weeks after the base transfer doesn’t change your deadline, but it does change when you can use those Avios.
The decision rule
Run these steps in order. A later calculation means nothing if an earlier condition rules you out.
- Check eligibility first. Confirm the partner account is in your name, any registration step is open to you, and any minimum transfer is an amount you’d actually move. If any of these fails, stop.
- Fix the qualifying event. Submitted-by or credited-by. Where the terms are unclear, the stricter reading (credited-by) wins.
- Count to the real end point. Count calendar days from today to the deadline’s stated time and time zone, not just the date. If the offer needs registration, registration requires a linked account, and it closes before the transfer deadline, count days to the registration cut-off as well.
- Compare with the relevant window. For a submitted-by offer, compare with the verification allowance: 14 days. For a credited-by offer, compare with verification plus the usual transfer time: 14 days plus five working days, which I plan as about 21 calendar days. If you counted to an earlier registration cut-off in step 3, verification must also fit inside that count, whichever qualifying event applies.
- Read the result. If your days remaining meet or exceed every window that applies, link today and you have a realistic chance, though a transfer can still run slower than Amex’s usual five working days. If any count falls short, the bonus is possible but not something to plan around.
Three hypothetical deadlines, worked through
Each scenario assumes you already hold a BA Club account, you’re enrolled for Membership Rewards online services, and you start linking today. The link is the only blocker, and any registration step closes no earlier than the bonus itself.
| Days until the bonus ends | Submitted-by offer | Credited-by offer |
|---|---|---|
| 21 | Comfortable. Even a full 14-day verification leaves about a week to submit. | Just inside the cautious window, with no margin. Link today; any slip on either side could miss it. |
| 12 | Uncertain. Verification must finish faster than Amex’s allowance. | Unlikely to plan on. Verification has to finish well inside its allowance and the transfer faster than usual. |
| 4 | Depends entirely on verification being very quick. | Very unlikely on the documented windows. Assume you’ll miss it. |
The 12-day credited-by case shows why combined windows bite. Say verification takes seven days, half the allowance. That leaves five calendar days for a transfer Amex says will usually complete within five working days. If a weekend falls in those five days, you’re also relying on the transfer being faster than usual.
None of these is impossible. Amex says transfers “can be much faster”. The point is narrower: below the window, the bonus becomes a possibility rather than a plan.
Why calendar days and working days don’t add up neatly
The two figures use different units, so you can’t add 14 and 5 and call it 19.

Verification, on my calendar-day reading, runs through weekends. The transfer figure doesn’t. Five working days spans five to seven calendar days depending on when you submit, plus any bank holiday that falls inside it. I plan on a full calendar week, which is how the cautious credited-by figure reaches about 21 days.
Timing within the week matters too. If verification completes on a Saturday, you can submit straight away, but the working-day clock effectively starts on Monday. For a credited-by offer, a Sunday deadline is closer to a Friday one.
Removing the friction you can control
You can’t speed up Amex’s verification, but you can avoid giving it a reason to stall.
- Own name only. Amex UK says points can only be transferred into an account in your name. You can’t link a partner’s BA Club account to catch a bonus, even if you share Avios through a household arrangement.
- Match your details before you link. Amex doesn’t document which fields it checks during verification. Making sure your BA Club name matches your Amex cardmember name is a sensible precaution, not a stated rule.
- Online or phone. You can also link or transfer by calling the Membership Rewards team on 0800 917 8053. The page doesn’t say phone linking verifies any faster, so don’t assume it does. A call is still useful if you want to confirm the details you’re submitting are right.
- Check BA’s stated transfer time. Amex refers you to partner details for specific timings. Use that figure in place of five working days, whether it’s shorter or longer.
- Confirm the link before you count. Check your account shows BA Club as linked before you treat the transfer clock as running.
If you probably won’t make it
The tempting move is to link, wait, then rush a large transfer the moment verification clears. Consider the downside first. Amex UK says transfers to frequent flyer and frequent guest partners are irreversible. If you miss the bonus, you still have the Avios and no way to move them back.
So size any transfer by what you’d move to BA Club without a bonus. If you were going to transfer that amount anyway, there’s little to lose by trying: a missed bonus leaves you where you’d have been. If you’d only transfer because of the bonus, a short window makes the gamble worse.
Avios moved for a redemption you’d make anyway needn’t be spent immediately. BA’s media factsheet says Avios don’t expire as long as you collect, use or purchase at least one every 36 months. The factsheet is undated, so confirm this against current BA Club terms. It also says reward flights are available “wherever there’s availability”, a reminder that bonus Avios don’t secure a seat. The wider argument against moving points before you’ve found one is covered in our piece on speculative transfers.
Making the next bonus a one-window problem
The race exists only because the link came late. Amex lets you link at any time with no limit on the number of partner programmes, so you can take verification out of every future bonus calculation now.
- Link every partner you might plausibly use, in your own name, whether or not a bonus is running. Linking doesn’t commit you to transferring anything.
- Keep your names and details consistent across Amex and each partner account.
- Note each partner’s stated transfer time from Amex’s partner details, so you know the one window that remains.
With BA Club already linked, a credited-by bonus needs only the transfer window, roughly a calendar week on Amex’s general figure, and a submitted-by bonus needs almost nothing.
For the bonus in front of you now, the rule is the one from the top. Read the terms for the qualifying event, exact end point and any registration cut-off. Count your days against verification alone (submitted-by) or verification plus the usual transfer time (credited-by), check verification also fits before any registration cut-off that needs a linked account, and treat anything below those windows as a possibility rather than a plan. Whatever you decide, only transfer what you’d use in BA Club without a bonus.
