HUGE New Amex Business Card Sign Up Bonuses

American Express has today launched the biggest EVER sign-up bonus we’ve seen on one of their cards in the UK market. Last year we saw a massive 100,000 membership reward points on the Amex Business Platinum card but this year the bonus is even BIGGER! Until the 30th of March 2023, the Amex Business Gold Card sign-up bonus is increased to a HUGE 60,000 membership reward points & the Amex Business Platinum Card sign-up bonus is increased to a MASSIVE 120,000 membership reward points. The Amex Business Card sign up bonuses work slightly differently for this offer (to normal) as they are paid in two separate parts.

This is pretty much as good as it gets for sign-up bonuses in the UK! Read the criteria below to see if you are eligible… but even if you aren’t consider sharing with friends and family who have a business!

Don’t forget the sign-up bonus eligibility requirements aren’t as strict on the Business Cards…

You will be eligible for the sign-up bonus if you haven’t had an American Express Card earning Membership Rewards points in the last thirteen months. For clarity, that means if you do currently hold or have held the following cards during the last 13 months you will be eligible for the sign-up bonus…

Any of the British Airways American Express cards
Nectar American Express
Marriott Bonvoy American Express
Harrods American Express
Platinum Cashback

This is my experience using the points system and is not a recommendation of any financial product. There are other credit cards that can earn you travel points including the Barclaycard Avios credit cardsTesco Credit Cards (by exchanging Clubcard points for virgin points, hotel stays and more) & Virgin Atlantic credit card. If you use one of my referral links to an American Express card upon you being accepted I will receive points, this varies between 9,000 – 18,000 depending on the card I refer you from.

What are the Amex Business Card Sign Up Bonuses worth?

Alternatively, they can be used for a £300 voucher (Amazon, M&S & many more,) £270 off anything on your credit card bill or 80,000 (£400) nectar points (transfer to Avios then to Nectar) amongst many other things. What can I do with the points?

Here are a few ideas of what you can do with some of those points…

Where can I fly for 25,000 Avios points? – https://pointsuncovered.com/american-express/where-can-i-fly-to-for-25000-avios-points/

Where can I stay for 30,000 Marriott points? – https://pointsuncovered.com/marriott/where-can-i-stay-for-30000-marriott-points/

What’s the catch to the Amex Business Card Sign Up Bonuses?

Unfortunately, the higher sign-up bonuses also come with a higher spend target AND are paid in two separate parts…

The Gold Business Card has changed from spending £3,000 in 3 months for 20,000 bonus points to spending £6,000 in 3 months for 40000 bonus points. That’s £2,000 a month or £500 a week. You then need to keep the card for a minimum of 14 months and make a purchase (of any amount) between months 14 – 17 of your card membership to get an additional 20000 bonus points. This would give you a total of 60,000 membership reward points. If you kept the card for 15 months your total outlay for the points would be approx £43.75 (first-year annual fee is FREE, afterward £175, annual fees are pro-rata refunded on cancellation)

The Platinum Business Card has changed from spending £6,000 in 3 months for 40,000 bonus points to spending £12,000 in 3 months for 80000 bonus points. That works out to be £4,000 a month or £1,000 a week. You then need to keep the card for a minimum of 14 months and make a purchase (of any amount) between months 14 – 17 of your card membership to get an additional 40000 bonus points. If you kept the card for 15 months your total outlay for the points would be approx £812.50 (annual fee is £650, annual fees are pro-rata refunded on cancellation)

Obviously, this doesn’t consider the additional benefits of holding the cards which include earning 1 membership reward point per £1 spent, £100 – £150 annual Dell cashback, and in the case of the Amex Business Platinum card £200 annual travel credit, airport lounge access, and elevated hotel statuses!

For the Platinum Business Card, it’s here – https://www.americanexpress.com/uk/charge-cards/platinum-business-card/

If you are unable to reach these spending targets I would wait until after the 30th of March when they should return to their original amounts.

Can I get a business card?

As long as you are a sole trader, partnership or registered as a limited company and meet the following criteria…

  • The business has a current UK Bank or Building Society account
  • You/The business have/has no County Court Judgements for non-payment of debt
  • You are aged 18 or over
  • You have a permanent UK home address

From personal experience, a personal bank account is acceptable as a sole trader and you do not need to be actively trading. We know people who were accepted putting company turnover close to or at 0.

What about the annual fee?

The Gold Business card is FREE for the first year (£175 afterward.)

The Platinum Business card has a £650 annual fee.

Remember all annual fees on American Express are pro-rata refunded on cancellation. So if you kept a card for 6 months out of the 12 you’d receive a 50% refund on the annual fee (if you paid one.)

Can my partner, family member or friend get one too?

Of course! There are NO limits to how many people in your household can have a card. If you got one card you could then refer your family member/friend etc for extra points (currently 20,000 from the gold business card or 30,000 from the platinum business card.) This way the points soon stack up! If you and one other person you referred got the Gold business card and met the sign-up bonus requirements (make sure you are both eligible) you’d have 140,000 membership reward points when pooled together!
