American Express,  Earning Points

Get A HUGE 100,000 Points With An Amex Business Card

Last year American Express launched the largest sign-up offer we’d ever seen in the UK for a credit card. The good news is that is BACK again! Until the 31st March 2022, you can get a 50000 membership reward point sign-up bonus on the Amex Gold Business Card & a HUGE 100000 points (yes not a typo!) on the Amex Platinum Business Card.

This is pretty much as good as it gets for sign-up bonuses in the UK! Remember the Gold Business Card is free for the first year & has a 50000 points sign-up bonus! (Just cancel before that is up, £125 afterward.)

Read the criteria below to see if you are eligible… but even if you aren’t consider sharing with friends and family!

Don’t forget the sign-up bonus eligibilty requirements aren’t as strict on the Business Cards…

You will be eligible for the sign-up bonus if you haven’t had an American Express Card earning Membership Rewards points in the last thirteen months. Yes a slightly bizarre figure but presumably to exclude those who got the sign-up bonus last year and then cancelled! For clarity, that means if you do currently hold or have held the following cards during the last 13 months you will be eligible for the sign-up bonus…

Any of the British Airways American Express cards
Nectar American Express
Marriott Bonvoy American Express
Harrods American Express
Platinum Cashback

This is my experience using the points system and is not a recommendation of any financial product. There are other credit cards that can earn you travel points including IHG credit card, Tesco Credit Cards (by exchanging Clubcard points for virgin points, hotel stays and more) & Virgin Atlantic credit card. If you use one of my referral links to an American Express card upon you being accepted I will receive points, this varies between 9,000 – 18,000 depending on the card I refer you from.

What are the bonus points worth?

50000 points

  • 150,000 Radisson Rewards points
  • 100,000 Hilton Honors points
  • 75,000 Marriott Bonvoy points
  • 50,000 Avios

Alternatively, they can be used for a £250 voucher (Amazon, M&S & many more,) £225 off anything on your credit card bill or 80,000 (£400) nectar points (transfer to Avios then to Nectar) amongst many other things. Explore all the other possibilities here – https://global.americanexpress.com/myca/intl/rewards/emea/action?request_type=un_Rewards&Face=en_GB

100000 points

  • 300,000 Radisson Rewards points
  • 200,000 Hilton Honors points
  • 150,000 Marriott Bonvoy points
  • 100,000 Avios

Alternatively, they can be used for a £500 voucher (Amazon, M&S & many more,) £450 off anything on your credit card bill or 160,000 (£800) nectar points (transfer to Avios then to Nectar) amongst many other things. Explore all the other possibilities here – https://global.americanexpress.com/myca/intl/rewards/emea/action?request_type=un_Rewards&Face=en_GB

What can I do with the points?

Here are a few ideas of what you can do with some of those points…

Where can I fly for 25,000 Avios points? – https://pointsuncovered.com/american-express/where-can-i-fly-to-for-25000-avios-points/

Where can I stay for 30,000 Marriott points? – https://pointsuncovered.com/marriott/where-can-i-stay-for-30000-marriott-points/

What’s the catch?

Unfortunately, the higher sign-up bonuses also come with a higher spend target…

The Gold Business Card has changed from spending £3,000 in 3 months for 20,000 bonus points to spending £5,000 in 3 months for 50000 bonus points. That’s approx. £1666 a month or £416 a week

The Platinum Business Card has changed from spending £6,000 in 3 months for 40,000 bonus points to spending £10,000 in 3 months for 100000 bonus points. Approximately £3,333 a month or £833 a week.

If you are unable to reach these spend targets I would wait until after the 31st March when they should return to their original amounts.

Can I get a business card?

As long as you are a sole trader, partnership or registered as a limited company and meet the following criteria…

  • The business has a current UK Bank or Building Society account
  • You/The business have/has no County Court Judgements for non-payment of debt
  • You are aged 18 or over
  • You have a permanent UK home address

From personal experience, a personal bank account is acceptable as a sole trader and you do not need to be actively trading. We know people who were accepted putting company turnover at close to or at 0.

What about the annual fee?

The Gold Business card is FREE for the first year (£125 afterward) as long as you cancel before then (and you can cancel at any time) you won’t pay ANYTHING. You won’t lose your points either, just transfer them to whichever scheme you want before you cancel.

The Platinum Business card has a £595 annual fee.

Remember all annual fees on American Express are pro-rata refunded on cancellation. So if you kept a card for 6 months out of the 12 you’d receive a 50% on the annual fee (if you paid one.)

Can my partner, family member or friend get one too?

Of course! There are NO limits to how many people in your household can have a card. If you got one card you could then refer your family member/friend etc for extra points (currently 20,000 from the gold business card or 30,000 from the platinum business card.) This way the points soon stack up! If you and one other person you referred got the Gold business card and met the spending target (make sure you are both eligible) you’d have 130,000 membership reward points when pooled together!
