Can Amex Points Be Transferred?

If you, your friends or family collect Amex Points you may be wondering can Amex Points Be Transferred to another person? After all pooling together your membership reward points will make reaching your next redemption easier, right?

Can Amex Points Be Transferred?

Unfortunately, Amex doesn’t let you transfer membership reward points to another American Express cardholder in the UK but there are other ways you can pool your points together…

How do we pool our points together?

A lot of loyalty programs allows you to transfer points between accounts for free. I’ve listed a few of the programs where you can pool your points together below.

To pool the points you will first need to transfer each persons membership points into the respective loyalty program and wait for them to arrive!

British Airways Executive Club

Unless you are a Gold member of BA’s Executive Club you are out of luck if you want to make a free transfer! If you are lucky enough to be a Gold member you can send a maximum of 27,000 Avios per person per year to individuals on your Friends & Family list. You can send a total of 162,000 Avios a year. You can read more on British Airway’s Sharing Avios Page.

So what do you do if you aren’t a Gold member? You can pay to send points to another account… but it is stupidly expensive! Full details here – https://pointsuncovered.com/avios/can-i-transfer-avios-points-to-a-friend-family-member/

The other option?

A household account! You can read more about Household accounts here – https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/executive-club/household-accounts – but essentially they allow up to 6 members in the same ‘household’ to pool together their Avios to make a redemption.

Key things

  • You would need to change yours or the recipients address to the same address
  • When redeeming Avios are taken from each person’s balance as a percentage of the total household balance. There is no way around this or to change the amount coming from each account.
  • This allows anyone in the household to make a redemption for themselves or anyone else in the account. So don’t do this with anyone you don’t trust!
  • Changes to the registered Household Account address can only be made once every six months. So you are stuck with them on your account until then!
  • This removes your ability to make redemptions for anyone outside of the Household Account.

Hilton Honors

With Hilton Honors you have two options once the points have arrived in the respective accounts.

  1. Pooling your points. A total of 11 Hilton Honors Members can pool their Points together to book a stay, free of charge. – https://secure3.hilton.com/en/hh/customer/account/poolPoints.htm
  2. Transferring your points. Hilton Honor Members can transfer points to another account (subject to the restrictions mentioned below) This can be done online here – https://secure3.hilton.com/en/hh/customer/account/transfer.htm

Key things

  • Points must be transferred in increments of 1,000 points up to a maximum of 500,000 points.
  • Each Hilton Honors Member is limited to sending no more than 500,000 points and receiving 2,000,000 points via transfers per calendar year
  • Each Hilton Honors Member is limited to making six transfers to other member accounts per calendar year.
  • You don’t need to be related to make a transfer to each other!

Marriott Bonvoy

Marriott allows you to transfer Marriott Bonvoy Points to another account, unfortunately, this can’t be done online and you need to ring up!

UK Number – 00800 1927 1927

If you are outside the UK you can find your local number here – https://www.marriott.co.uk/help/rewards-customer-support.mi

You will need…

The details of the account you are transferring from, plus you will be asked some security questions to verify.

The details of the account you are transferring to, including loyalty number, name on the account and email address.

How much you want to transfer.

Key things

  • You can “…transfer up to a maximum of 100,000 Points per calendar year to another Membership Account as long as both accounts are in good standing and have each been open for at least sixty (60) days.”
  • If you have rewards activity in your account such as a qualifying stay or other points earning activity you will be able to transfer points after 30 days.
  • You can receive up to a maximum of 500,000 Points per calendar year from other Membership Accounts.
  • You don’t need to be related to make a transfer to each other

Conclusion

Don’t forget to check what is possible in the loyalty program you want to pool your points in before transferring! Not all loyalty programs allow you to transfer your points to friends and family. You don’t want to end up with points stuck in an account where you can’t transfer and don’t have enough points for a redemption!
