Can I Extend My BA Amex 2-4-1 Voucher?

With news of the BA Future Travel Vouchers being extended you might be wondering what is happening with your BA Amex 2-4-1 Voucher. After all, even if you received the previous extension your voucher could be expiring within the next few months! The good news is that you CAN extend your BA Amex 2-4-1 Voucher artificially even if the actual voucher itself isn’t extended. Read on to learn more!

Will my BA Amex 2-4-1 Voucher be extended?

Officially as of yet, there is no news on whether they will be or not. Although we’d be surprised if they aren’t with the recent extension to the BA Future Travel vouchers.

What’s been happening with the extensions for the BA Amex 2-4-1 Vouchers?

So far there have been multiple extensions to the expiry date of BA Amex 2-4-1 vouchers since the pandemic has started. The most recent extension in February saw those who had a voucher expiry of 31 December 2021 or before extended by 6 months. This means if your voucher expires on 1 January 2022 or later you were out of luck for an extension.

Even if you got the 6-month extension it’s quite possible that your voucher could be expiring within the next few months. So what can you do?

Use a Future Travel Voucher to extend your BA Amex 2-4-1 Voucher

First of all, don’t panic! If the absolute worse happens and BA doesn’t extend your BA Amex Amex 2-4-1 Voucher you can extend it until 30th September 2023 in the form of a Future Travel Voucher. How? Well…

Book a return flight to ANYWHERE with Avios & your 2-4-1 voucher, somewhere cheap is ideal. Perhaps London – Paris for 9,500 Avios (off-peak) + £70 ‘taxes and fees’ for both passengers.

Once the 24-hour cooling-off period is over cancel your flight for a Future Travel Voucher. This will then enable you to take advantage of the Future Travel Voucher extension allowing you to travel before 30th September 2023 (you need to complete your travel by this date.)

To rebook you need to ring British Airways. There is no need to stick to the same destination, if you change you’d just need to pay the difference in Avios * ‘taxes + fees.’

But this shouldn’t be your first choice…

Why? If you want to book flights at T-355 the extra admin with a future travel voucher is likely to lead to you being beaten by anyone who just has Avios & a BA Amex 2-4-1 Voucher PLUS you can’t change the name of the passengers. You can ring BA to convert your Future Travel Voucher back into Cash + Avios minus the £35pp ‘taxes + fees’. If your voucher is expired it will when released from the Future Travel Voucher just ‘disappear’ which sort of defeats the point of doing this…

Conclusion

As of yet, I wouldn’t use the Future Travel Voucher method to extend your BA Amex 2-4-1 Voucher. There is time to sit and wait to see if an extension to your voucher coming This would save you from the extra complications of having a Future Travel Voucher rather than a voucher & Avios in your account! If the absolute worst happens and there is no extension it won’t take you long to make an Avios booking and then cancel for a Future Travel Voucher.
