Amex transfers and Hilton stays: two different ways to earn the same points

Paying for a Hilton stay with an Amex card can involve two points calculations. Hilton looks at eligible charges on the hotel bill. American Express looks at what the card earns and how many Membership Rewards points you choose to transfer. Working them out separately makes it easier to see how much you’ll have for your next booking.

Start with the hotel bill

Hilton awards 10 base points per US dollar of eligible spend at most brands. Rates are lower at some brands, including 5 at Homewood Suites and Spark by Hilton. For a UK stay, Hilton converts eligible sterling charges into dollars using its own rate, which may differ from the rate your card uses. Hilton Honors terms

Ask the hotel which part of your bill qualifies. Hilton says eligible incidentals charged to the room and paid directly by the member at checkout can earn points. Check whether your rate and charges qualify, especially if you booked through an agency. Hilton Honors terms

Then work out what a transfer adds

Use your card’s earning rate to estimate how many Membership Rewards points the payment could generate. If your UK Amex account offers a Hilton transfer, use the quote it gives you. Check the destination and any conditions shown before confirming.

A £200 example

Suppose a £200 hotel bill contains £160 that qualifies for Hilton points, and suppose Hilton’s exchange rate converts that £160 into $200. At a brand earning 10 base points per dollar, the stay earns 2,000 base points before any bonuses. If the card earns one Membership Rewards point per £1 on the full £200 payment, that earns 200 Membership Rewards points. If your transfer quote were two Hilton points for each Membership Rewards point, those 200 would represent 400 Hilton points as part of a qualifying transfer. The two-to-one ratio is an illustrative input for this calculation.

The example uses an assumed exchange rate and card earning rate. For your own booking, use the hotel’s qualifying charges, the brand’s base rate and your card’s terms. If you’re short of a reward booking, compare that shortfall with the points you already have available to transfer. A stay you haven’t completed won’t fill a gap you need to cover today.
