Oman Air First Class with Avios: How to book the 787-9 suite

For years, we waited for Oman Air to actually join Oneworld. The promises dragged on, but as of Summer 2026, the integration is real, live, and bookable. You can finally use your Avios to fly in one of the most exclusive commercial cabins in the sky.

This matters right now because European and US reward flights are heavily squeezed this summer. Savvy points collectors are looking east, and Oman Air offers a massive upgrade over the usual British Airways routes to the Middle East. If you know how to navigate the partner award charts, this is a spectacular way to spend your points.

What it costs to book Oman Air First Class with Avios

A one-way First Class redemption from London Heathrow (LHR) to Muscat (MCT) requires 103,500 Avios plus roughly £355 in taxes and fees. Because the flight clocks in at 3,621 miles, it falls squarely into Zone 5 of the standard Avios partner award chart.

If you cannot find First Class availability, Business Class on the exact same route drops to 77,250 Avios plus approximately £280. You can fund this easily if you hold an American Express card in the UK, as Membership Rewards transfer instantly at a 1:1 ratio to both British Airways Executive Club and Qatar Airways Privilege Club.

One hard rule you must accept: you cannot use your British Airways Amex Companion Voucher here. Standard Oneworld alliance rules apply, meaning that voucher is strictly locked to British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus metal. You have to pay the full Avios price for every passenger on an Oman Air redemption.

Why this beats the competition in 2026

The Middle East redemption market has completely changed this year. With American Express UK dropping Etihad Guest as a direct transfer partner, Avios collectors need a reliable alternative for high-end travel to the region. Oman Air fills that void perfectly.

Compare it directly to your other options. British Airways First Class costs slightly fewer Avios on off-peak dates, but BA will hit you with £500 or more in surcharges. More importantly, BA’s aging 777 First Class product simply cannot compete with Oman Air’s modern suites.

Emirates First Class used to be the default luxury option, but their Skywards program has heavily devalued. Booking Emirates First to Dubai now costs significantly more points and attracts brutal carrier surcharges that often exceed £800. Qatar Airways offers a legendary A380 First Class, but they operate it on very few routes in 2026, making it nearly impossible to book.

How to find and book reward seats

You should search and book your Oman Air flights through Qatar Airways Privilege Club rather than British Airways Executive Club. While the Avios price is identical due to the unified currency, Qatar’s booking engine handles Middle Eastern partner routing much better.

In my experience, BA.com throws up frequent phantom availability errors when searching for Oman Air. You will click a seat, only for the website to crash at the payment screen. To avoid this, link your BA and Qatar accounts. Search on the Qatar Airways website, find the space, and pull directly from your combined Avios balance.

The 14-day availability drop

Oman Air is notoriously stingy with First Class seats at the 355-day mark. If you look a year out, you will usually only see Business Class available. However, they consistently release unsold First Class suites to partners exactly 14 days before departure.

This creates a clear strategy. Book a Business Class seat as soon as the schedule opens to secure your travel dates. Then, set a calendar alert for T-14. When the First Class space drops, you can call up and pay the Avios difference to upgrade.

Connecting flights to Asia

Flying London to Bangkok via Muscat prices as two separate segments on the partner award chart. You will pay roughly 182,000 Avios one-way. That breaks down as 103,500 Avios for the London to Muscat leg, and 78,500 Avios for the onward flight to Bangkok.

The onboard experience and lounge access

Oman Air First Class passengers departing London Heathrow Terminal 4 gain access to the Qatar Airways Premium Lounge. This is widely considered the best Oneworld lounge in Europe, featuring restaurant-quality à la carte dining and proper champagne.

Once on board the Boeing 787-9, you are entering an incredibly exclusive space. The cabin features just eight suites in a 1-2-1 configuration. Every suite has sliding privacy doors, an onboard lounge area, and a massive entertainment screen. Your Avios ticket also includes a generous 50kg checked baggage allowance, which is identical to what cash-paying passengers receive.

If you are traveling as a couple, select the middle seats (1E/1F or 2E/2F). The privacy divider lowers completely to create a shared dining experience. Solo travelers should grab 1A or 2A for maximum privacy by the windows.

How to avoid high UK departure taxes

The £355 tax bill out of London is largely driven by the UK Air Passenger Duty (APD). If you want to keep your cash in your pocket, you can dodge this fee entirely by starting your journey in Germany.

Oman Air also flies their First Class equipped 787-9 from Frankfurt (FRA) to Muscat. If you book a cheap positioning flight to Frankfurt, the taxes on your First Class Avios redemption drop to around €140 (roughly £118). For a couple traveling together, that represents a cash saving of almost £500.

The risks you need to know about

This redemption is genuinely brilliant, but the operational realities require a warning. Oman Air frequently swaps their three-class Boeing 787-9 for a two-class version or an older A330, depending on their daily operational needs.

If this happens on your travel date, you will be downgraded to Business Class. The airline will refund the Avios difference, but it ruins the First Class experience you planned for. You have to accept this equipment swap risk when booking.

You also need to check the transit times if you are connecting through Muscat to Asia. Oman Air’s current schedules can sometimes force a six-to-eight hour layover. The First Class lounge in Muscat is excellent, but an eight-hour wait in the middle of the night is exhausting regardless of how good the free food is.

The Points Uncovered verdict

Honestly, I am convinced this is the smartest premium Avios redemption you can make this summer. Casual collectors are still blindly searching for British Airways availability to Dubai and finding nothing but frustration. By looking slightly off the beaten path, you get a vastly superior suite, better food, and lower taxes.

You do have to navigate the T-14 availability game, and the risk of an aircraft swap is annoying. But for 103,500 Avios, the math absolutely works. If you want to learn more ways to maximize your points balance this year, explore more guides on Points Uncovered.
