British Airways has launched another way you can purchase Avios points called Avios Balance Boost. This enables Executive Club members to ‘boost’ the Avios they’ve earned in the last 30 days by 1X, 2X, or 3X and purchase them for a discounted rate. What is Avios Balance Boost?

It’s a new program from British Airways that allows you to purchase 1X, 2X, or 3X the amount of Avios you’ve earned in the last 30 days at a discounted rate.

How does it work?

Visit this page on the BA website – https://pgt.shopping.ba.com/#booster-section

Log in and scroll down to the Balance Boost section on the page. Here you will be able to select eligible transactions that you want to boost and whether you want to boost them 1X, 2X or 3X. After this you just have to pay… it really is as simple as that!

How much does it cost?

When purchasing under 300,000 Avios (which most people are likely to fall under) you are paying between 0.92p and 0.96p per Avios point. For purchases made in June/July BA is also offering a 10% bonus (this will show when you go through to checkout) which means you can buy Avios from as little as 0.84p.

To work out the maths you just need to divide the cash price (£196.65) by amount of points you will get (23,523) and this will give you your cost per Avios point.

Is it good value?

We typically value Avios at 1p (how to value yours?) which means you should do well here, particularly with the 10% bonus BUT we would never buy Avios speculatively. If you want to buy Avios you should have a plan/reason which should save you money! E.g. when cash rates are high but there are still Avios seats.

Are there any transactions that I can’t use Avios Balance Boost on?

The T&Cs (see point 6 under Balance Booster) mention that…

Not all transactions are eligible for boosting. Exclusions are balance transfers from other airlines, Nectar exchanges, Avios shared or gifted by other members and previously bought Avios.
