Get 20,000 IHG Points On The Free IHG Credit Card

IHG are currently running a boosted bonus on their FREE IHG Rewards Club Mastercard. Until the 30th March you will get 20,000 IHG points for spending £500 in your first 3 months. Normally you will only get 10,000 for spending £500 so this is an excellent offer (and matches the £99 IHG Rewards Club Premium Mastercard sign up bonus.)

What are 20,000 IHG points worth?

You should be able to get around £80 worth of value from the points when redeeming for IHG stays.

Whilst 20,000 IHG points won’t go far in central London you can stay at Heathrow in the Holiday Inn Express London Heathrow T4 for 20,000 (many other airport hotels around the country too including London Gatwick, Manchester & Birmingham airport.) Or cities such as Manchester and Birmingham have options at 20,000 points

Alternatively, you can exchange your IHG points for Avios points. 20,000 IHG Points will get you 4,000 Avios worth around £40 or 1 single economy seat from London to Zone 1 destinations in Europe which include Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen & Paris for 4000 points (off peak)

Is it worth signing up for?

This is my experience using the points system and is not a recommendation of any financial product. There are other credit cards which can earn you travel points including American ExpressTesco Credit Cards (by exchanging Clubcard points for avios, hotel stays and more) & Virgin Atlantic credit card.

In my opinion yes, even if you don’t want to use the card in long term! Here is why…

1) £500 in 3 months is an easy target to meet, even for a small spender AND there is no annual fee.

2) 20,000 IHG points are worth around £80 in hotel night stays

3) Even if you don’t plan on ever staying in an IHG hotel you can convert them into 4000 Avios. (worth around £40)

What about the Premium card?

Whilst the sign-up bonus is unchanged on the Premium card it may make sense for you depending on how often you stay in IHG hotels and how much you will put through the card.

If you can put through a minimum of 10K in a year through the Premium card it may make sense for you to go for it despite the annual fee of £99, here is why…

£10,000 spend will net you 20,000 IHG points (approx. £80 value)

It will also get you a free night voucher. This is valid staying in any IHG hotel, so if you stay in an InterContinental in many of the world’s major cities this should be worth £250+

Remember that’s how much the voucher could be worth. Take into consideration where you would stay when you pay cash to give it a value.

You should be able to profit from the card (£80 + £250) – £99 = £231 without taking into consideration the sign-up bonus!

More information on the Premium card and it’s benefits can be found here – https://credit-card.creation.co.uk/microsites/ihg-rewards/

Are you tempted to sign up to the FREE IHG card for the boosted sign-up bonus?
