Do Hilton Points Expire?

If you are collecting Hilton Points to save up for a big stay you maybe wondering if Hilton Points Expire? After all you don’t want to lose your hard earned collection! Below I’ll be looking at rules of Hilton points (yes they can expire!) and suggesting a few ways to stop your points expiring!

When do Hilton Points Expire?

Whilst all this information is in the T&Cs on Hilton’s website here I don’t blame you if you haven’t read it! To save you reading all the way through the important point for us here is number 13 (below.)

  • Members who do not have eligible activity as defined in a. – d. below in any 15 consecutive month period may be removed from the Program and are subject to forfeiture of all accumulated Points. At the discretion of Hilton Honors, such Members may be permitted to remain in the Program and removed after five years of inactivity. To keep accumulated Hilton Honors Points, the Member must take one of the following actions within a 15 consecutive month period:
    1. stay at a hotel within the Hilton Portfolio pursuant to the terms herein;
    2. earn Hilton Honors Points through any third party source of Hilton Honors Point accumulation, including a Hilton co-branded credit card, pursuant to its terms;
    3. purchase Hilton Honors Points; or,
    4. donate Points through The Hilton Honors Giving Back Program.

Stopping your Hilton Points expiring

Now you know your points expire after no eligible activity in 15 months let’s take a look at some of the things you can do to keep your points alive!

  1. Staying in a Hilton Hotel (points or cash booking.) If you can spend roughly once a year in a Hilton Hotel you’ll keep your points alive for the foreseeable future!
  2. Credit a car rental to your account, purchase a priority pass or use a One SimCard abroad. Details on the Hilton Website.
  3. Transfer American Express Membership Reward Points to Hilton. This is probably the ‘cheapest’ way to keep your points from expiring. You only need to transfer 200 points over roughly once a year to keep your balance ticking over! Need a referral? – https://pointsuncovered.com/amex-referral-link-uk/
  4. Purchase Hilton Points on an annual basis. You can do so from $10 for 1,000 points.
  5. Donate points through The Hilton Honors Giving Back Program. This will set you back 10,000 points for a $25 donation to one of the charitable organisations on Hilton’s website.
  6. Transfer points to a partner, friend or family member etc. It’s completely free and you can send a minimum of 1,000 points. Alternatively you can pool your points with your partner, friend or family member. Pooling your points doesn’t stop them expiring. It just allows you to move them out of your account before they do!

If you don’t plan on spending any time soon in a Hilton Hotel the most cost effective way of your points alive would be to transfer 200 membership reward points on an annual basis. Or if you have a partner/friend etc. with a Hilton account you could send each other 1,000 points back and forward once a year. A small cost if you have a large Hilton balance you want to safeguard!
