British Airways Coronavirus Cancellation Policy

A lot of airlines and hotel groups have implemented various cancellation, refund and rebooking policies due to the current Coronavirus outbreak. BA was seen to be a little behind the times with the support they were offering customers with the current Coronavirus outbreak. The good news is BA have just further relaxed their British Airways coronavirus cancellation policy and is now allowing you to cancel any flight up to the 31st May in return for a voucher.

What is the British Airways Coronavirus Cancellation Policy?

At the time of writing the current policies offered by British Airways are as follows:

You’re travelling with British Airways between 14 March & 31 May regardless of when you booked.

You can cancel your booking and receive a voucher for the same value. Vouchers are valid for 12 months and can be used to any destination.

Your voucher can be used as part payment towards a future booking to any destination. It must be redeemed for travel on flights taken within 12 months of your original date of departure.

You made a booking with British Airways between 3 March & 31 May to any destination at any time/date.

All bookings made between 3 March to 31 May can be exchanged for a voucher of the same value

Your voucher can be used as part payment towards a future booking to any destination. It must be redeemed for travel on flights taken within 12 months of your original date of departure.

There is also zero change fees on all bookings made between 3 March to 31 May. You can change your travel dates to the same destination up to 12 months from the original booking date. However, you will be on the hook for any difference in fare.

Should you book flights/cancel previous bookings?

This is a tough one! Personally I wouldn’t book any travel until the situation with Coronavirus has settled. Whilst you can change your booking or get a voucher if you decide not to travel your money will be stuck with BA. There are NO cash refunds. You will also need to make another booking and fly with them within 12 months of your original flight date.

If you have an existing booking it gets a little more interesting. Whereas previously you had no choice if you wanted to cancel you’d lose your money, the situation is slightly different. You can get a refund…albeit in the form of a voucher with BA.

Does it make sense to do this? Whilst many of you were probably waiting for a way to get out of your flights without losing your money. I’m not so sure this is a great idea… why? Well with the news of the EU relaxing rules regarding airplane slots it’s likely BA will cancel a chunk of flights now they aren’t forced to fly ‘ghost flights’. If your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to a full refund in CASH.

The risk? Well that BA will remove this offer and then you are stuck with a flight you don’t want to use with no way of a refund! If you have an imminent flight within the next few days I’d take the voucher, otherwise, I’d sit tight to see what happens!

Are you tempted to cancel with the recent addition of an e-voucher refund available to you?
