Avios points needed for New York

Ever dreamed of flying to New York? But your budget doesn’t spread far enough to fly in comfort with Business Class? Well, using Avios points that could well be in reach! Let’s take a look at the Avios points needed for New York flights with British Airways.

Avios points needed for New York

For all these examples I am using peak pricing and looking at dates 11 months in advance. If you are travelling off-peak or at times when cash rates are high you may find you get a better return on your Avios points. To work it compare the cash rate to the price per Avios (take the cash rate from the ‘taxes and fees’ then divide balance by the Avios cost. If you are under 0.9/1p per point I would say paying cash is preferable.

Economy

First of all, I would never recommend using Avios points for economy flights outside of Europe due to the poor value you get! If you want to travel economy you are better off paying cash or flying an alternative airline for a cheaper rate… But nevertheless here is what is required per person.

26,000 Avios Off-Peak Return
40,000 Avios Peak Return

You will need to pay £308.95 per person return in ‘taxes and fees’ per ticket. This makes it incredibly poor value when you can often pick up a return flight to New York with British Airways for as low as £269 (if you are willing to go hand luggage only) – https://www.britishairways.com/travel/low-price-finder/public/en_gb

A fairer comparison would be an economy seat with luggage (as Avios tickets include luggage) that would cost you around £360. That means 40,000 Avios gets you around £50 off at 0.125p per point value (very poor!)

(And remember on Avios redemptions you don’t earn any Avios or tier points)

Premium Economy

If you fancy a little more comfort (more legroom the most important in my opinion!) Then Premium Economy might be right up your street! Read more about British Airways Premium Economy here – https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/information/travel-classes/premium-economy/world-traveller-plus – The Avios per person required are as follows…

52,000 Avios Off-Peak
80,000 Avios Peak

You will need to pay £494.49 per person return in ‘taxes and fees’ per ticket. A return premium economy flight would set you back in the region of £600. That means 80,000 Avios gets you around £100 off at 0.125p per point value (very poor!)

(Don’t forget on Avios redemptions you don’t earn any Avios or tier points)

Business Class

Prefer a bed in the sky with access to British Airways lounges and fast-track security? Business-class is what you are looking for! Read more about British Airways Business Class here – https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/information/travel-classes/business/club-world – The Avios required per person are…

100,000 Avios Off-Peak
120,000 Avios Peak

You will need to pay £684.95 per person return in ‘taxes and fees’ per ticket. Here are where you will start to see a better return on your pence per Avios points! A Business Class return flight to New York will cost you around £1300. That means 120,000 Avios points will save you around £600 at 0.5p per Avios point.

First Class

Want nothing but the best with fine dining and a seat right at the front of the plane? You sound like a first class sort of person! Read more about British Airways First Class here – https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/information/travel-classes/first/first – The Avios points required per person are…

136,000 Avios Off-Peak
160,000 Avios Peak

You will need to pay £684.95 per person return in ‘taxes and fees’ per ticket. A First Class return flight to New York will cost you around £2400. That means 160,000 Avios points will save you around £1700 at just 1p per an Avios point.

American Express Companion Voucher

Don’t forget if you have a British Airways American Express® Credit Card or British Airways American Express® Premium Plus Card you can earn a companion voucher (which is basically a 2-4-1 Avios voucher) when you spend £20,000 on free BA Amex & £10,000 on the premium BA Amex within a year. This voucher will allow you to book 2 seats for the cost of 1 seat in Avios. You will need to pay the ‘taxes & fees’ for both seats, however.
