JW Marriott Venice: Resort & Spa in Italy

Me and my partner had been planning to take a trip to Venice for some time and with our upcoming first anniversary, it seemed like the perfect excuse to getaway to the romantic city! We booked the JW Marriott Venice based on two things: 1) The picture of entering the private dock by speed boat. 2) That the hotel is on a private island, which was appealing to us as we could retreat away from the expected hustle and bustle of the mainland.

Location

The JW Marriott Venice is located on a private island, Sola Delle Rose, in the Venetian lagoon, a 20 minute ride to central St. Mark’s Square by complimentary shuttle service. This runs every 30 minutes from about 8.30 in the morning to midnight in both directions. In the morning there is also a direct service one way from the hotel to Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia/ Piazzale Roma where you can catch the bus/train, this runs every hour between 6am – 11am . From Marco Polo Venice airport you are looking at 150 euro water taxi one way direct to the hotel (40 ish minutes) or you can alternatively take the Alilaguna waterbus (red or blue line) to San Marco then hop on the shuttle service to the hotel. (2 hours and about 15 euro per person)

JW Marriott Venice

You can’t help but be impressed as you pull into private dock, although you only get to do this if arrive by private taxi… the shuttle service goes somewhere else!

As soon as we were off the boat we were given tickets for our luggage and directed to the check in desk, inside then on the first right. Here the process was smooth: we were welcomed and given a map of the island, talked a little bit about things to-do and given water whilst we complete the formalities. The only irritating thing was it seemed to take so long, about 20 minutes! As we were Gold Elite members and here for a special occasion we were upgraded to a Junior Suite on the ground floor for free. We paid 200,000 points for a 5 night stay (50,000 a night with one night free.)

The Room

Our Junior Suite was based on the ground floor at the back of the hotel. The room was spacious and modern as you would expect from a hotel which only opened in 2015! The air conditioning isn’t great however we were very warm on the minimum setting in a very mild May!

As you walk in there was a walk in wardrobe/luggage room on the right, with a door to the bathroom on the left. Further down you have the kettle/coffee machine then into the main space of the room you have the bed on the left, with a TV (poor selection of channels) that swivels round so you can watch on the sofa also, which is on the right hand side of the room. At the end of the room was a table and chairs and two large windows (with no balcony as we were on the ground floor unfortunately.) There is also a door to the bathroom to the side of the bed.

The Bathroom

The bathroom was large and modern with both a bath and rainforest shower. There was a toilet in a separate cubicle inside the bathroom. There was a large mirror, Aromatherapy Associates toiletries and plenty of space for your own bits and pieces!

Pool

The outside pool in the grounds wasn’t open when we visited in May however we did go and visit the roof top pool. As the weather wasn’t the greatest it wasn’t too busy! As you can see there are nice views over the lagoon however there isn’t a lot of space so I can imagine it would get very busy in peak season!

Spa

Outside area of the spa

We booked into the spa for a treatment and to enjoy the facilities. It’s very nice albeit a little on the pricey side. It has a small indoors and outdoors pool (which is accessible by sliding the glass doors from the inside pool,) a sauna, bio-sauna & hammam. There isn’t many beds inside to relax on so if the weather isn’t nice you may struggle for one! The staff were great, we both had a very good massage and they prepared a great hammam scrub for us.

The Grounds

We walked around the hotel grounds to get a feel for what else is on the island. There were a few things such a small church & gardens you could stroll around however not much as the outside pool/restaurant was closed during our stay. You can hire bikes as part of the resort package to get around but as the island is so small it seems silly.

There’s a Michelin star restaurant on the island called Dopolavoro, it looks very nice although we didn’t get to eat there during our stay.

Everything else

There is a hotel lobby bar which we’ve relaxed in either with a cup of tea or complimentary water whilst planning what we was doing for the day.

We enjoyed room service a couple of times for lunch when we was on the island still. 20 euros for a Gluten Free make your own pasta, with Gluten Free bread rolls. This was big enough for both of us for lunch… there is a 9 euro delivery fee however!

The hotel also has it’s own cafe named Dispensa, which sells an assortment of pastries, panini and hot drinks among other things, useful if you don’t want to spend 35 euros on breakfast or if you aren’t a great breakfast person like me! You can also pick up a small bottle of the olive oil they press on the island for 25 euros…

Gluten Free Calzone
Gluten Free Calzone… not the easiest thing in the world to find!

The concierge was good from our limited interactions with them. There was some sort of confusion or mix up for one restaurant where they initially promised to make a gluten free calzone and then the restaurant apparently changed their mind… we didn’t know who was at fault there. They did however manage to find another restaurant to make me off menu a gluten free calzone… which was absolutely amazing!

Conclusion

Book a private taxi for the best arrival experience!

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our time at the JW Marriott Venice. It’s location means it might be bothersome for some people with a 20 minute ride to and from St Mark’s Square however we enjoyed the tranquility away from the main land. The rooms are clean and modern, the Spa was fantastic and we were treated extremely well by staff! We would happily come back again, For more details and booking click through here –
