If you’ve been searching the web about travel points you may have seen the American Express Preferred Rewards Gold Credit Card often mentioned by bloggers & websites. It has one of the most generous sign up offers (10000 Amex Points) considering the card has no annual for the first year! You can also be referred by myself for the American Express Preferred Rewards Gold Credit Card, you will receive an additional 2000 points. This is my experience using the points system and is not a recommendation of any financial product. There are other credit cards which can earn you travel points including IHG credit card, Tesco Credit Cards (by exchanging Clubcard points for avios, hotel stays and more) & Virgin Atlantic credit card. If you use one of my referral links to an American Express card upon you being accepted I will receive points, this varies between 9,000 – 18,000 depending on the card I refer you from.
This is my first part of three looking at the various ways you could spend those points! This part focuses on what hotels you can stay in for your 20000 Amex Points! The second part focuses on what experiences you can get for your points and the third part on where you can fly to!
What hotels can I convert 20000 Amex Points to?
There are currently 3 hotel partners that you can directly transfer your membership rewards into their respective loyalty schemes with. These are Hilton Hotels, Marriott/SPG & Radisson.
What value should I be aiming to get on a hotel redemption?
As you will see the equivalent room rate for your points can vary massively depending on where and when you stay. I aim for around 0.5p per Hilton points, 0.66p for a Marriott points and 0.33 per Radisson Rewards point. Your valuation may vary depending on how you earn your points. I often find redeeming points for popular stays such as New Year’s Eve can work out incredible value compared to the whacked up cash rate.
You can work out the rate you are getting by dividing the cash price by the points and you’ll get the pence per point value. On that note let’s move onto the hotels…
For example, booking 07 May 2019 – 15 May 2019, 1 room for 2 adults, 40,000 points or $336 dollars.
Silver, Gold and Diamond Elite Members will get every 5th night free when booking a Standard Room Reward Stay of 5 nights or more using all Points (up to four free nights on a stay of 20 consecutive nights).
For example, booking 07 May 2019 – 17 May 2019, 1 room for 2 adults, 40,000 points or $420 dollars.
Interesting redemptions include the Marriott Courtyard Pilsen at 7,500 points a night (5 nights) This can be booked as 5 nights rather than 4 for the points as Marriott allows you to get a free fifth night if you’ve redeemed your points for four nights.
For example, booking 07 May 2019 – 12 May 2019, 1 room for 2 adults, 30,000 points or approx £516.55.
